Comfort in Familiarity: Why Re-watching Movies and TV Shows Soothes the Mind

In a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming, many of us turn to various forms of media for solace and comfort. Whether it's reading an old favourite book, losing ourselves in a favourite album, or binge-watching our go-to TV series, there's something inherently comforting about immersing ourselves in familiar stories and characters.

One phenomenon that's particularly prevalent among those with mental health issues is the tendency to re-watch movies and TV shows that we've already seen countless times before. While it might seem puzzling to some, there are several reasons why this practice can be incredibly soothing for the mind.

First and foremost, re-watching familiar media provides a sense of predictability and control in a world that often feels unpredictable and chaotic. When we already know how a story will unfold and how it will end, it can be reassuring to revisit those narratives, especially during times of stress or anxiety.

Moreover, re-watching favourite movies and TV shows allows us to escape from our own reality for a while and immerse ourselves in a different world. For those struggling with mental health issues, this temporary escape can provide much-needed relief from intrusive thoughts and overwhelming emotions.

Additionally, there's a sense of nostalgia associated with revisiting familiar media. For many of us, certain movies and TV shows hold special memories and associations from our past. Re-watching them can evoke feelings of comfort and safety, transporting us back to happier times.

It's also worth noting that watching familiar media can be less mentally taxing than trying to engage with new or unfamiliar content. When our mental health is already compromised, the idea of processing new information or navigating complex plotlines can feel daunting. Re-watching something we already know and love requires less cognitive effort, allowing us to relax and unwind more easily.

Of course, it's essential to strike a balance between re-watching familiar media and engaging with new experiences. While there's nothing wrong with finding comfort in the familiar, it's also important to challenge ourselves and explore new interests from time to time.
